Seven fantastic tales of wild futures, strange visions, and unexpected comings-of-age, by the acclaimed coauthor of the bestselling Pern novels New York Times–bestselling author Todd McCaffrey is proof positive that when it comes to vision, talent, and imagination without boundaries, the apple never falls far from the tree. The son of fantasy fiction legend Anne McCaffrey, as well as her frequent coauthor, he offers up seven captivating tales that run the gamut from science fiction to humor to horror, each one a treasure and a marvel. With heart, wit, and astonishing invention, Todd McCaffrey carries us away to places we never before dreamed we could go—whether he is chronicling the trials of a young boy with a most unfortunate name or a notorious convict released on parole. He treats us to a wild night in Paris that ends with a bang and introduces us to a talking car that simply will not shut up. With the chilling tale of a famous astronaut’s orphaned daughter, whose search for an unknown parent leads her to dark places, the strange yarn of a moon child and her very special tree, and the heartfelt story of a child burdened with soul-crushing responsibilities and the remarkable answer to his prayers, Todd McCaffrey shows himself to be a peerless storyteller whose short works of fiction are as exhilarating and powerful as his novels.

The Silk Road is as iconic in world history as the Colossus of Rhodes or the Suez Canal. But what was it, exactly? It conjures up a hazy image of a caravan of camels laden with silk on a dusty desert track, reaching from China to Rome. The reality was different--and far more interesting--as revealed in this new history. In The Silk Road, Valerie Hansen describes the remarkable archeological finds that revolutionize our understanding of these trade routes. For centuries, key records remained hidden--sometimes deliberately buried by bureaucrats for safe keeping. But the sands of the Taklamakan Desert have revealed fascinating material, sometimes preserved by illiterate locals who recycled official documents to make insoles for shoes or garments for the dead. Hansen explores seven oases along the road, from Xi'an to Samarkand, where merchants, envoys, pilgrims, and travelers mixed in cosmopolitan communities, tolerant of religions from Buddhism to Zoroastrianism. There was no single, continuous road, but a chain of markets that traded between east and west. China and the Roman Empire had very little direct trade. China's main partners were the peoples of modern-day Iran, whose tombs in China reveal much about their Zoroastrian beliefs. Silk was not the most important good on the road; paper, invented in China before Julius Caesar was born, had a bigger impact in Europe, while metals, spices, and glass were just as important as silk. Perhaps most significant of all was the road's transmission of ideas, technologies, and artistic motifs. The Silk Road is a fascinating story of archeological discovery, cultural transmission, and the intricate chains across Central Asia and China.

In an effort to reclaim the fundamental principles of Christianity, moving it away from religious right-wing politics and towards the teachings of Jesus, the American Christian activists profiled in this book agitate for a society free from racism, patriarchy, bigotry, retribution, ecocide, torture, poverty, and militarism. These activists view their faith as a personal commitment with public implications; their world consists of people of religious faith protecting the weak and safeguarding the sacred. Recounting social justice activists on the frontlines of the Christian Left since the 1950s--including Daniel Berrigan, Roy Bourgeois, and SueZann Bosler--this book articulates their faith-based alternative to the mainstream conservative religious agenda and liberal cynicism and describes a long-standing American tradition, which began with the nation's earliest Quaker abolitionists.

The adiabatic quantum computation (AQC) is based on the adiabatic theorem to approximate solutions of the Schrödinger equation. The design of an AQC algorithm involves the construction of a Hamiltonian that describes the behavior of the quantum system. This Hamiltonian is expressed as a linear interpolation of an initial Hamiltonian whose ground state is easy to compute, and a final Hamiltonian whose ground state corresponds to the solution of a given combinatorial optimization problem. The adiabatic theorem asserts that if the time evolution of a quantum system described by a Hamiltonian is large enough, then the system remains close to its ground state. An AQC algorithm uses the adiabatic theorem to approximate the ground state of the final Hamiltonian that corresponds to the solution of the given optimization problem. In this book, we investigate the computational simulation of AQC algorithms applied to the MAX-SAT problem. A symbolic analysis of the AQC solution is given in order to understand the involved computational complexity of AQC algorithms. This approach can be extended to other combinatorial optimization problems and can be used for the classical simulation of an AQC algorithm where a Hamiltonian problem is constructed. This construction requires the computation of a sparse matrix of dimension 2n × 2n, by means of tensor products, where n is the dimension of the quantum system. Also, a general scheme to design AQC algorithms is proposed, based on a natural correspondence between optimization Boolean variables and quantum bits. Combinatorial graph problems are in correspondence with pseudo-Boolean maps that are reduced in polynomial time to quadratic maps. Finally, the relation among NP-hard problems is investigated, as well as its logical representability, and is applied to the design of AQC algorithms. It is shown that every monadic second-order logic (MSOL) expression has associated pseudo-Boolean maps that can be obtained by expanding the given expression, and also can be reduced to quadratic forms. VOYAGES IN WORLD HISTORY, BRIEF EDITION, is a mainstream text for the world history course that masterfully uses the theme of movement--the journeys of peoples, ideas, and goods--to help the reader make sense of the huge range of people, places, and events throughout history. Each chapter is framed around the story of a person who traveled within the time period and region of the chapter. Students can practice being critical readers by evaluating the traveler's observations and attitudes. VOYAGES IN WORLD HISTORY includes a primary source feature called Movement of Ideas, which will help students develop the core skill of analyzing sources by allowing them to compare multiple explanations of significant ideas. This brief text will meet the needs of instructors who want a lively narrative style without sacrificing the themes and pedagogy that make world history understandable to students; it is also ideal for instructors who want to supplement a text with lots of primary sources. Available in the following options: VOYAGES IN WORLD HISTORY, BRIEF EDITION (Chapters 1-32); Volume I: To 1600 (Chapters 1-16); Volume II: Since 1500 (Chapters 15-32).
