Was it an earthquake? A meteor? Or something else entirely? Running from a marriage proposal in Seattle, Dana Ingram returns to her parents’ farm in Western Colorado for a two-week vacation in Paradox Valley. Only a couple of days into it, however, a small earthquake leaves them without power. Cars won’t start, batteries don’t work and cell phones are useless. When a Black Hawk helicopter vanishes off of radar, Captain Corey Conaway is sent in to locate it and its crew—all while keeping the disappearance out of the media. When she meets Dana and her cousin, Butch, Corey solicits their help in the search. But as they travel on horseback through the rugged and remote Paradox Valley, what they stumble upon soon has them running for their lives.

Somewhere between "Animal Farm" and "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" lies "Paradox: Valley of the Sheeple," which explores the dire consequences of fear, ignorance and blindly following the herd. Set on a Western sheep ranch, the novel tells the tale of the Ransom family, their Peruvian shepherds, and the gregarious and humanlike Sheeple, who refuse to face painful facts about themselves and accept dreadful truths about their existence. True to its name, Paradox is a place of irony and contradictions, replete with natural beauty and barbarous bloodshed, quiet serenity and clamorous pandemonium, and the immortal struggles between predator and prey, good and evil. Not only is Paradox a peculiar and perplexing home to its inhabitants, it's also a microcosm of our world.

Temperature data were obtained to a depth of approx. 1900 m (6300 ft) in well GD-1, W. longitude 109° 36.9', N. latitude 38° 09.8', elevation 1503 m at Gibson Dome in the Paradox Basin, southeastern Utah. Thermal conductivities were measured on 15 specimens representative of the major formations. With the possible exception of some minor perturbations within the Molas and Leadville Limestone formations near the bottom of the well, no evidence exists for vertical water movement with seepage velocities exceeding a few mm y−1 within the well or formation.
